Who cares?

Approximately 240,000,000 people in Indonesia and the population of Jakarta is estimated to be between 9 and 14 million. Not only is the population of Jakarta mindblowing, but the fact that the estimate could vary by up to 5 million is absolutely staggering. The reason for this is that the governement would be unable to accurately record the numbers due to the way society works over here. It would be so easy to lose oneself in the masses of people. It seems each individual is so undervalued. I am currently sitting in a coffee shop in Bandung so I can access the internet. I stand out like a neon light and speak a language that most wouldn't understand. The streets are extremely busy and around every corner there is another street or laneway or alley that is full of people and seems to go on forever. People here seem to look after their own patch (which may be only a few square feet) but no one seems to see the big picture. It seems from an outsiders perspective that no one cares. No one here knows me or probably cares! That's the reality. I listened to a lady today that spoke about her work here and how a young girl who had given her life to Jesus told her that, for the first time, she knew what it meant to be loved. THERE'S THE ANSWER! It doesn't matter how many people, or in what context I find myself, knowing that Jesus loves me gives me more than enough love to cope with any situation. Knowing that amongst the masses of people around me, Jesus knows me and cares for me. In fact, God knows every single person here and wants a relationship with them through His son. Now that is enough for any person! For all those people on the streets, God loves them! How awesome is that!

A I write this I am sitting in a very nice coffee shop in a very expensive shopping centre. If you know me that may sound like I am way out of my league and you would be right, except I am sitting in the heart of Jakarta. My dollar goes a lot further and the prices become much more reasonable. I look out the 4th storey window of the shopping centre and the surrounding buildings and streets are immaculate and look expensive. I can see the back of one of these buildings and I can make out a lonely figure, sleeping under the shade of the building on the concrete. He captures my thoughts as he doesn't belong in this scene. If I go back to this morning to my hotel room and walk out the door, this would be a normal sight. Last night as we returned by foot from a days outing we passed thousands of people living in what we would call extreme poverty. People begging using their children, men wheeling trollies with contents that can only be described as garbage. But we are told that there is far worse in Jakarta. I'm trying to understand all this and I am struggling. I find myself wanting to see more of the poverty side of Jakarta. I think it is so that I can get it to sink into my brain. This is not all here for me to look at while I am on holidays........this is their existence! So what is God telling me? There are so many cliche passages I could use but it is hard for them to impact me. What does Matthew 25:40 mean in this context? Ephesians 3: 14-21 comes to mind. When I think of all this, I fall to my knees and pray to the Father, the Creator of everything in heaven and on earth. I pray that from his glorious, unlimited resources he will empower you with inner strength through his Spirit. Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong. And may you have the power to understand, as all God’s people should, how wide, how long, how high, and how deep his love is. May you experience the love of Christ, though it is too great to understand fully. Then you will be made complete with all the fullness of life and power that comes from God. Now all glory to God, who is able, through his mighty power at work within us, to accomplish infinitely more than we might ask or think. I must rely totally on God. It is the spiritual needs of these people that is more important than their physical needs. It is hard to look past the physical needs! I will fall to my knees and pray. Pray that God will give show me what He requires of me and He will help me understand and accept the greatest gift He has...........undeserved grace through Jesus Christ.
 

Man of might and mercy

Last week I had the privelege of attending a conference in Melbourne entitled "Men of might and mercy". After listening to many great speakers and sharing my thoughts with other men that were there with me, I came away from the conference with a sense of what it means to be a Godly man in 2011. If I look to implement what this means in my work, I understand that I must be strong in my committment but gracious in my relationships and decision-making. Once again the issue of pokie machines in raging in Bendigo. Machines programmed to suck the life and money out of those who can least afford it. I now look to step up to the plate to fight this issue once again, determined to fight for a just cause and call on God to give me the means and words in which to do it. If you believe there's something worth fighting for, maybe now is the time to fight. Just do it with might and mercy.

 

Parachute 4 Poverty

Friday 15th October, organisers for the big day arrive to set up and the spirits remain high despite drenching rains, wild winds and the temperature gauge dropping by the minute.  Some equipment can't be set up yet because it's just too windy. Saturday 16th organisers and volunteers start arriving at 7am. Experts say that for every 1000 feet you go up, the mercury drops 2 degrees. Forecast of hail, strong winds and more rain, but the really bad weather is supposed to stay south of the ranges. There's been lots of prayer for "sunshine with a few white puffy clouds over Bridgewater". You may have heard the song......"be careful what you pray for, you just might get it!" Well, although the temperature was cold and the wind was strong, it looked like it was all systems go for the jump day, only problem was that severe weather had delayed planes leaving Melbourne and unless the weather cleared down there, the day would have to be abandoned. A small group of faithful servants went away and prayed some more. To cut a long story short, the day went off extremely well, all 36 parachute jumpers got up and down safely and everyone there had a fantastic time. The awareness and money raised for the Karen was incredible and once again God revealed Himself to me through others. So what did I learn? Prayer can be very specific, so be careful what you pray for and never give up praying. So often we don't see the big picture and this occasion was no exception. Ephesians 6:18 tells us to pray on all occasions with all sorts of prayers and requests. God's provision is as perfect as His grace. He knows exactly what we need. If we think small and pray small, perhaps we should expect small. So next time you pray, think as big as your imagination will let you and then some. Paul sums it up in the closing verses in his letter to the Ephesians. Ephesians 3:20-21. Now to him who is able to do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, for ever and ever! Amen.

 

Saints or Magpies

It's the question on every football fan's lips. Who will win the 2010 AFL premiership? There's a black and white army of faithful followers who will defend their colours to the end and then there's the rest of the football world that will barrack for anyone but Collingwood. As a Collingwood fan myself, I love to go to the MCG and watch a game of footy and look around at 50,000+ people screaming and cheering for their club with a passion that seems to be barely controllable.

White line fever effects those that don't even play the game and there is another personality that looms inside just waiting to be unleashed by whatever it is that turns on the switch. I too get swept up with the excitement of it all and often stop to ponder if my desire to express my passion for the Lord can ever reach such heights, and wouldn't it be great if all this noise and excitement was created because we were praising Jesus.

But then it strikes me.....When we are sitting next to a fan from the opposition team and cheering madly, they don't hear a word. We can cheer as loud as we like and praise our side but they don't get what we are saying. If anything, they think we are completely mad and should barrack for their side. The same can be said for sharing our faith. If we shout through a megaphone to the world and tell them what we think they need to hear, they won't hear a thing and will probably suggest that their way is a better way. 

Sharing our faith is as much about modelling our lives on Jesus as it is about barracking for Him. So next time you're at the footy, scream 'til your hearts content 'cause the opposition supporters won't barrack for your team, and next time you get to share your faith remember that a gentle whisper or a kind gesture may have a greater effect.
