Choose Your Friends Wisely

In the book of Numbers, there is an incident recorded in the 11th chapter that speaks profoundly into our lives as well. Moses tells us that the people began to complain about some of their hardships. In verse 4, Moses says, ‘The rabble with them began to crave other food and again the Israelites started wailing and said, “If only we had met to eat! We remember the fish we ate in Egypt at no cost – also the cucumbers, melons, leeks, onions and garlic. But now we have lost our appetite; we never see anything but this manna!”’ (Numbers 11:4-6)

This is a disturbing story for it demonstrates the ungratefulness of these people to the numerous blessings of God. How did is start? Moses said it began with the rabble? Who was the rabble?

These were the non-Israelites that had left Egypt in the Exodus and they were the source of friction within the camp. It was those people who did not know God who eventually incited the children of God to rebel and complain.

It’s imperative that we choose our company wisely. Bad company corrupts so it’s crucial that we choose friends and companions that lift us up and encourage us to walk closer with God. It’s worth reflecting on Psalm 1 and considering what company we keep.
